I'm curious about which icons you take and why you liked them.", dann heißt es wahrscheinlich wirklich, dass man nur sagen darf, was gefällt und nicht, was nicht. Mein Fehler...

18th-Aug-2008 03:29 pm - close the door, earn what you deserve, get a high score and do a manly thing [empfehlungen, escapism, feminism, lmao, music, olympics]
Escapism: DailyMail article about three women who live in the 50s, 40s and 30s. I like to close the front door, pull off my gloves and know that I am in my own world.

Olympics: TheGuardian shows tattoos of Olympics' participants and asks you to compete in a literary quiz. I got 5 out of 10. :)

Edited to add:
Music: 'Salt, Peppa, and Spinderella' by Johnny Foreigner is a great song but the video might cause epileptic seizures (I'm not kidding here. I don't suffer from epilepsy and my eyes fucking hurt when I watched the vid).

Books: TheWashingtonPost believes that Young adult novel series "Twilight" has sunken its teeth into feminism and I call bullshit. Quote: "Yet on some level, it seems that children may know human nature better than grown-ups do. Consider: The fascination that romance holds for many girls is not a mere social construct; it derives from something deeper." O RLY?
Speeshul points for missing the point: "Three decades of adults pretending that gender doesn't matter haven't created a generation of feminists who don't need men; they have instead created a horde of girls who adore the traditional male and female roles and relationships in the "Twilight" saga."
And for the lulz: "Instead, a growing number of boys in this country spend much of their free time absorbed in the masculine mayhem of video games such as Grand Theft Auto and Halo or surfing the Internet for pornography." Surfing the internet for porn is a exclusive male thing to do? Bwahahahahahaha!

I just saw that the author of the Post article Leonard Sax has written "Boys Adrift: The Five Factors Driving the Growing Epidemic of Unmotivated Boys and Underachieving Young Men". I'm sure I saw this book being torn apart in some blog for the unfair representation of both genders but I can't find the link. (This is my last ETA. Promise!)

11th-Aug-2008 12:40 pm - Olympics "It's too little what she is offering here." [olympics, rant]
So, I'm in Olympics fever and watch whatever is on - rowing, volleyball, eventing, swimming.

The opening celebration was kind of dull. I get that all nations want to see their representatives but it took so bloody long that I turned the TV mute and did something else until Germany came along. I was kind of puzzled because of the order of the nations marching in. Ordered by manpower? Medal record? No, it was by Chinese alphabet, sorting Germany in 198th position.

Presseschau Berlinale

17th-Jul-2008 03:01 pm - Being Human (TV, 2008) [being human]
Guy Flanagan ... John Mitchell (Vampire)
Russel Tovey ... George Sands (Werwolf)
Andrea Riseborough ... Annie (Ghost)

What I liked:

the theme of the show (what does it mean to be human, what's normal?): George's love for gardening, Mitchell's fear of being called "dangerous", Annie's ritual of making tea, the hilarious scene when the estate agent assumes George and Mitchell are gay (in this show: gay = normal)

the interaction between Annie, George and Mitchell (their living together doesn't look like the set up for "romance" but genuine friendship)

naked!George (he is more naked than not, but where is naked!Mitchell? On the other hand Mitchell is kinda scrawny so it might be better not to see him naked)

What I didn't like:

the music (Amy Winehouse? Snow Patrol? It sounded like someone turned on the radio while shooting - very uninspired choices),

the abusive fiancée (Peter) of George's ex-girlfriend Julia (is grabbing her throat normal too? Or making excuses for his behaviour?)

the ex-girlfriend (because locking in yourself and your ex-boyfriend so you have to talk about the relationship is such a clever idea under normal circumstances *rolls eyes*)

the evil, power-hungry black vampire (stereotypical casting imo)

Questions:

Why couldn't George change in the woods like he did the first time(s) around? Why looking for a saver spot? Is he getting more dangerous?
What is going to happen to the evil Vampire corporation? Is Annie going to "finish her journey"?

Quote:

Annie: Does anyone ever 'choose' Slytherin?
George Sands: No, because that would be like saying I bartend. In the dark. 'I'm a sociopath.'

A little review of my oracle asking a few weeks back.

Me: Is Spain going to reach the semis?
The Oracle: No, but thinks look bright nevertheless.

You've been wrong, oracle. Or was it a way of telling me that Spain was going to reach the final and win it? But you have to reach the semi before you can go to the final.

But I'm my own oracle as my entry from the 25th of june shows. It was a quote from athletics on Eurosport where the commentator was referring to a Spanish runner tricking the opposition. See, it had a deeper meaning. :P

So, I just watched "Aspekte" (German culture magazine) and learned that Kafka did have a motorbike. Now, you might ask yourself why I find that bit of information so extraordinary. And why I have to tell you about Kafka and his bike.

I read "Bridget Jones" a few years back, in fact it's the book I re-read almost constantly when I'm at home because it's the only one I have there. The protagonist Bridget works in a publishing house and she talks about a presentation of a book called (you guessed it) "Kafka's motorbike". Ha! I always thought that this is one stupid name for a (fictional) book but it's rooted in real life.

30th-Jun-2008 01:36 pm - Opera - is growing on me [computerprobleme, fussball, music, opera browser, shameless]
Firefox still acts stupid, so I'm using Opera now. Their content blocking isn't as efficient as ADblock but it will do. I also like the quickstart (when you open an empty site, your 10 quickstart favourite are displayed) feature.

I found out how to add my "add to del.icio.us" link to the toolbar. (help here). Still looking for a dictionary feature.

I started watching "Shameless", a British series about a lower-class family living in a council estate. I watched three episodes and we already covered: a fake marriage, a car thief boyfriend, a gay brother, arson, an involuntary trip to France, people being released from prison, people trying to avoid prison, oral sex, anal sex, medical conditions such as agoraphobia and the Tourette syndrome etc.

It's a great show. The characters are generally likeable (I'm talking about a father who spends most of his screen time passed out drunk on the kitchen floor) and the dialogue is witty (if a little hard to understand). I ordered the box set of season 1-3.

Have a Spanish Euro celebration video, featuring players like Ramos, Casillas, Villa runing around half-naked and splashing each other with champagne.

Still happy that Germany has come so far. My BahnCard25 has been extended for one month for every Germany victory (30th of October) and I only paid 19 € for it.
