word of the day: procrastination

I just learned a new word: procrastination. I always thought I understood that word. I thought it said "spamming my flist (but in a meaningful way)" because whenever someone said he/she was procrastinating, they posted fic or meta or polls or cake recipes.

But what they actually said, was that they postponed something else by writing porn, fanfic, meta etc. Can you believe that?

I feel cheated (by the English language). No-one told me. I thought I got it from the context of the posts but I was still miles off.

Procrastination is one of my favourite words and my top worst habit. Like what I'm doing right now - reading flist instead of working. :/

But yeah, it's happened to me, too, with other English words - being so sure it means one thing until I finally decide to check a dictionary only to find out it actually means something else entirely.

Shame on you. :P

I heard procrastination from a German friend in German and just thought "what the fuck?". Oh, well. You live, you learn.

If it's any consolation, I constantly feel cheated by American English spelling (I think traditional UK English should be the dominant spelling choice).

I try to spell in British English but I'm not consistent.
